Design sprint methodology – Innovate with speed and clarity

What is a design sprint?

A fast-paced methodology that blends the best of Design Thinking, Lean Startup, UX, and Agile—allowing you to validate ideas and build functional prototypes in just one week.

Ideal for reducing uncertainty, aligning teams, and speeding up product discovery.

1. Understand

The goal: Establish a solid foundation for the rest of the sprint by ensuring everyone on the team understands the challenge at hand.

  • The first phase of a design sprint is dedicated to understanding the problem, the users, and the project’s context.
  • The team gathers and shares insights about the problem, the target audience, and their needs.
  • This phase often involves stakeholder interviews, user research, competitive analysis, and a review of existing materials.

2. Ideation

The goal: Explore as many possibilities as possible without worrying about feasibility or implementation at this stage.

  • In the Ideation phase, the team generates various potential solutions to the problem.

  • This phase typically involves brainstorming sessions, where team members are encouraged to think creatively and share their ideas freely.

  • The team might use techniques like “How Might We” questions, crazy eights, or mind mapping to spur creative thinking.

3. Sketch

The goal: Is to have a variety of visual representations of potential solutions to the problem, which can be easily compared and evaluated.

  • The Sketch phase is about turning the ideas generated during Ideation into tangible, visual concepts.
  • Team members individually create rough sketches or storyboards of their ideas, focusing on communicating the core concepts rather than perfecting the design.
  • This allows everyone to quickly iterate on their ideas and share them with the rest of the team.

4. Decide

The goal: Is to narrow the options and choose the most promising direction(s) for the next phase.

  • The Decide phase is focused on selecting the most promising ideas from the Sketch phase to move forward with.
  • The team evaluates each sketch or storyboard, considering user needs, feasibility, and potential impact.
  • They might use methods like dot voting or decision matrices to rank the ideas and reach a consensus on the best one(s) to prototype.

4. Decide

  • They might use methods like dot voting or decision matrices to rank the ideas and reach a consensus on the best one(s) to prototype.

5. Prototype

The goal: Is to quickly create a tangible representation of the solution that can be used to gather user feedback.

  • Depending on the project and available resources, this can be anything from a paper prototype to a clickable digital mock-up.
  • The team will focus on the most critical aspects of the solution and iteratively refine it based on the feedback received during user testing.
  • In the Prototype phase, the team creates a scaled-down version of the chosen solution(s) that can be tested with users.
